Overview

The goal was straightforward — build something I actually wanted to use. A clean, dark-themed Pokédex app inspired by a beloved iOS app called Dexter. Fast. Beautiful. Informative. Installable on iPhone. The constraint: build it without a developer.

With a clear design vision and Claude AI as a development partner, a fully functional, production-ready Pokédex app covering all 1025 Pokémon was designed, built, and deployed in a single weekend.

The Challenge

The goal was straightforward — build something I actually wanted to use. A clean, dark-themed Pokédex app inspired by a beloved iOS app called Dexter. Fast. Beautiful. Informative. Installable on iPhone. The constraint: build it without a developer.

The Process

This project reframes what AI collaboration actually looks like in a professional design workflow. Every decision — layout hierarchy, interaction patterns, color, typography, animation — came from design direction. Claude handled the execution: HTML, CSS, JavaScript, API integrations, and performance optimization.

The iteration loop was immediate. Share a screenshot, flag an issue, ship a fix. No tickets, no standups, no lag. Design decisions that would typically require back-and-forth over days happened in minutes.

What Was Built

The app covers the full national Pokédex across all 9 generations with Pokémon Home sprites, a shiny toggle, regional form variants with pagination, type filtering, weakness grids, hidden abilities, egg groups, and a collapsing hero UI on scroll. A custom WebM splash animation with alpha transparency was composited over the brand color. The whole thing is deployed as a Progressive Web App — installable directly to your home screen from Safari.

Total footprint: under 300KB.

The Takeaway

The biggest unlock wasn't the speed — it was the clarity it created around what design actually is. The vision, the decisions, the taste — that's irreplaceable. The implementation is now a conversation. For clients, this means faster concepts, faster validation, and a closer relationship between what gets designed and what gets built.

Timeline: ~10 hours across 3 days
